Drip irrigation system installed!
On the weekend of July 8-10 a group of dedicated volunteers installed the drip irrigation system in most of the raised beds. Drip irrigation saves a lot of water and is better for the plants because it deposits the water right where the plants need it: at the roots. It does however require up-front investment and works best for larger home vegetable and flower gardens. If you have a large garden, think about drip irrigation to save water! If your garden is small, we recommend hand watering with a hose or a watering can. Below are some photos of the new system.
Main lines run from the water source to each of the beds, and three lines of drip tape are laid down on the soil, just where we have planted.
This detail shows how the drip lines are connected to the main lines.
We still need to work on some leaks!…. Some leaks were caused by faulty washers on old hoses, and some appear to be caused if the drip irrigation system is on too long! We are learning!
