“Eating Consciously and Ethically” Series  -  Wellesley Hills UU Church

Movie Night: “Food, Inc.” –Friday, Feb. 3rd, 7:00 pm Parish Hall (93 minutes) Dana Tomaszewski

This Academy Award nominated film is a great introduction to the topic of “conscious eating” and the UUA’s advocacy for “ethical eating.” The film exposes how our nation’s food supply is controlled by a handful of corporations that care little about producing healthy and sustainable food but instead are motivated by bottom line issues: profit margins, return on investments and Wall Street earnings. Although the film presents a dismal assessment of our current food supply, it ends on a hopeful note that consumers might bring about change.

The film is rated “PG” because some scenes of how our food is manufactured are disturbing and not suitable for children. However, everyone else who eats should see this film. Light, healthy snacks will be available.

Connecting the Dots – Farms, Food and Health –Sunday, Feb. 12, 11:45 am  Chapel Becky Reed, MSN

Does it matter what we eat? Does it matter where food comes from? Learn how agriculture has changed in the past 100 years and how we are paying the price by losing our connections to the land and affecting our health. We can support sustainable farming, protect the planet, and greatly improve our health by paying more attention to what we eat.

Food for Thought: A Book Discussion - Thursday, March 8, 7:30 – 8:30 pm Chapel

Throughout the “Eating Consciously and Ethically” series, we hope that you will be inspired to read more about the issues covered. Among suggested titles are the following:

Food Matters by Mark Bitumen
In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan
Animal, Vegetable, Miracle* by Barbara Kingsolver
The End of Overeating by David Kessler, MD.

This final segment of the UULC series will allow us to share our information, experiences, insights, and opinions. Whatever your personal convictions may be, please come and be prepared for a lively discussion.

*The Wellesley Library has donated 40 used copies of Animal, Vegetable, Miracle to go to good homes.  If you would like one, they will be available in Parish Hall on Sundays, or contact Jim McLaren at jimmclaren@verizon.net
